I receive emails from bodybuilding enthusiasts every day, and one of the most common questions they ask me is'
"Is joining a gym mandatory for building a strong, muscular body?"
The answer, my friend, is no. I saw incredible results when I spent my first two years building muscle at home using some basic equipment in my basement.
Maybe you can't stretch your pockets to accommodate a gym membership. If you're super busy, it will save you time if you can start building muscle at home. Until you get the body you want, you may be too embarrassed to train in a gym. (Although this really isn't a very good reason!)
Whatever your reasons are for training at home, you don't need to worry!
I currently workout at a gym with my training partner, but I have to say that my years spent building muscle at home were fantastic. Travel to and from was never an issue. I could simply slip downstairs whenever I felt like building muscle at home and all of my equipment was there waiting for me.
|I could blast whatever music I wanted without having to worry about others. I could grunt, yelp, and scream through my sets without bugging anybody (squatting to failure is difficult, okay?), and even go shirtless. Once my workout was over, I could collapse on the floor in exhaustion with the confidence that my post workout shakes were right there in the kitchen instead of a long drive to my home.
It was a great experience.
If you have the money to spend and plan on building muscle at home long term, you can stock up on some workout equipment, but for most people this simply won't be possible. Luckily, planning out a proper bodybuilding routine doesn't require the use of any fancy equipment, plus the machine exercises can easily be swapped for free-weight substitutions when building muscle at home.
Some basic equipment is all that you need for building muscle at home:
1) An adjustable barbell with free-weight plates
Getting a cast iron set is a good idea, plus you have to purchase enough weights to enable you to progress from week to week.
2) Adjustable dumbbells
Get a single set that includes both the barbell and dumbbells together.
3) A bench with incline adjustments
Get one that can be set on an incline and also contains safety catches, if you are going to be training alone.
4) A chin-up bar
Available for purchase at around 15-20 dollars, these can be put inside a door frame.
5) A squat rack
A full squat rack can be pricey, so it's typically the trickiest piece of equipment to purchase. If you just can't afford it, you'll have to look at other options.
You should never squat when building muscle at home without a safe place to drop the bar!
As long as you have these basic tools in your arsenal you can perform an equally effective workout without ever having to join a traditional gym.
